VI&CO | The Bowman House
London, United Kingdom
About this property
Welcome to The Adelphi Townhouse, one of London’s ten oldest surviving townhouses. Built in 1673 and restored for modern stays, it keeps its original panelled rooms and a rare panelled staircase, in a hidden Adelphi address minutes from Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square and the Thames. With four bedrooms, three and half bathrooms, two lounges and a panelled dining room, it sleeps up to 8 guests. Professionally managed by VI&CO for a seamless, boutique-hotel stay.
Built in 1673, in the years after the Great Fire, this is one of the ten oldest surviving townhouses in London. Around 1820 the front was given a Regency façade, but inside, the original panelled rooms survive, along with a very rare panelled stairwell that runs through all five floors. Restored with real care, it has genuine age and character, brought up to the standard of a modern stay. Almost every room has two large sash windows.
The ground floor has a deep burgundy panelled dining room with a round table for eight and a crystal ship chandelier. On the first floor, the drawing room is a layered mix of antiques, a grandfather clock and a gilded overmantel mirror. A second lounge in soft aqua panelling has a deep blue sectional and a 65-inch smart TV. Below, the newly fitted kitchen has charcoal cabinetry, brass handles, quartz worktops, twin ovens and Nespresso machines, with a reclaimed-timber round table for slow breakfasts.
Four bedrooms sit across the second and third floors: a 6ft super king and three doubles, each with period furnishings, artwork and hotel-quality bedding. There are three full bathrooms with power showers, plus a separate cloakroom. Super-fast wifi runs throughout, and Sonos is built into the main reception rooms.
The house accommodates up to 8 guests across four bedrooms. A cot or a single air mattress can be added to the fourth bedroom on request.
The Neighbourhood
The house sits in the Adelphi, a small, quiet conservation area that was once the garden of the Duke of Buckingham’s York House, between Covent Garden and the Thames. It is a hidden residential enclave with real history. Samuel Pepys lived here in the 17th century, Charles Dickens set a novel here in the 19th, and its streets have been a backdrop for productions including The Crown, Fleabag and Cruella.
Charing Cross and Embankment stations are a minute’s walk away. Within three minutes you reach Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the Savoy and the river. Within about twelve minutes you can walk to the South Bank, Westminster and Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St James’s Park, Theatreland, Soho and Leicester Square. With two tube stations on the doorstep, you won’t need a car, and parking nearby is limited and expensive. Our curated local guide, available to every VI&CO guest, goes beyond Google, with personal recommendations, reserved tables, and exclusive access to some of the neighbourhood’s best-kept addresses.
